London, . . . Oct. 15. F--reflecting on the consequences
produced by luxury, in every nation where it has been
introduced, says that no state magician ever yet found out
any other enchantment like luxury, either for bringing unto
or keeping nations in servitude. --This writer having
observed that we have lived to see the day when we can vie
in luxury with Rome itself, even in its most corrupt times,
recommends the chastisement of the follies of the age to the
comic powers of Mr. Foote. --"Let him represent (says he)
the revels of a midnight masquerade at Mrs. C---, where
common prostitutes mix without distinction with the wives
and daughters of Patricians; where the language of the stews
is whispered in the ear of a modest maid, if such a thing
there be; also let him be severe upon these particular
people who are the chief promoters and directors of all
fashionable preparations for slavery, and by so doing he
will prove himself a read friend to his country."
