As I am a constant reader of your Chronicle, I could not
fail of meeting with the piece signed Candidus, wrote on the
navigation of the Schuylkill, and, it being my common
practice to look first at the author's name, before I peruse
the performance itself, I was led from thence to expect an
impartial, moderate, and candid discussion of the subject. .
. [4 lines] But how I was mistaken, on perusal of the
piece itself. The author appeared like some giant in
romance, diffident of his own prowess and abilities,
invoking the aid of an old song, his Uncle Toby, Hudibras,
the church, popish prelates, and the Devil! . . . [15 lines]
By the conjuration of his powerful auxiliary the Devil, I
concluded that even an old song might, by the same magic
authority, answer some kind of end, in keeping up the
spirits of such workmen. . . [1 1/2 columns]
May not your old song, with much more propriety, be
applied to your own conduct than to his? Let me sing it in
your ears, and tell me whether the words are not in tune
with your nerves.--
      Touch but his pelf,
He will shew King and Country are centered in self.
