London. . . Extract of a letter from Southampton, Sept. 30.
Last night the melancholy news of his Royal Highness the
Duke of York's death was received with the utmost appearance
of unaffected concern: the ball which was very brilliant,
broke up immediately; the company retiring from the rooms;
and by the general voice, all public amusements have been
suspended in respect to the memory of a person who has
honoured that place with so many marks of his patronage and
favour.
