From the Gentleman's Magazine, for January, 1769. Sketch of
a moral and political map of Europe. By Mr. Moser, Envoy
from the Elector Palatine to Hanover. . . [Short "sketches"
of Russia, Sweden, Denmark, Poland, Hungary, Bohemia]
Germany, its heroes, like Italian pictures, shew best at a
distance; the rest parcel out to desarts, petty tyrants,
priests, pedigreed beggars, and pedants, and all her
neighbours know Germany. Yet this is the mother of Arminius
and Frederic; of Leibnitz, and Wolfe; of Handel and Graun. .
. [2 more lines, followed by sketches of Switzerland,
Holland] England, the domain of liberty and property, the
country of extremes. . . [8 lines] post-chaises, Italian
music and pictures, but few ears or eyes; the nest of
foreigners; the country of Shakespeare, Newton, Hogarth.
France, the country of citoyens and mode. . . Here life is a
dance, and aukwardness of step its great disgrace. . . [5
more lines] Tyranny may grind the face, but not the
countenance of a Frenchman; his feet are made to dance in
wooden shoes. [3 more lines] Spain. . . [9 lines] nor is the
country of Calderon and Cervantes, more than its neighbours,
the land of ignorance, vanity, indolence, poverty, envy.
[Portugal follows] Italy, an unweeded garden, its
inhabitants flies bred on a dead horse. . . [2 lines] the
country of arts, tricks, castration, and banditti; of
Raphael, Goldoni, Farinelli, Archangeli.
