In the King's college, in this city, the students generally
have liberty, instead of a weekly Latin theme, to write a
copy of Latin or English verses. On such an occasion, one
of the young gentlemen, of only fifteen years of age, wrote
the following little ode; which is printed as it first
appear'd, excepting only the alteration of a few words;
which, it is presumed, is no more than what frequently
happens to the compositions of the greatest masters, before
they are submitted to the inspection of the public.
TO FRIENDSHIP.  AN ODE.
Heavenly friendship, balm of woe,
Source of happiness below!
What, but thy enlivening smile
Can the soul of care beguile?
