[Philadelphia, July 8] On Monday morning, the day
subsequent to the Anniversary of our Independence, an
eulogium in honour of the brave men who have fallen in the
contest with Great-Britain, was delivered at the German
Calvinist Church, by Mr. Brackenridge. The same day an
entertainment was given by the Honorable the Congress to the
Minister Plenipotentiary of France, the President and chief
magistrates of this state, the Consul of France, several
Continental officers civil and military, and many strangers
of distinction. The company were entertained with music,
and the following toasts, introduced by thirteen vollies
from Col. Nicola's regiment, were drank. . . [lists each of
13 toasts] In the evening a set of brilliant fire-works were
exhibited, particularly excellent rockets, which, after
ascending to an amazing height in the air, burst and
displayed thirteen stars. The whole was conducted with
great order and decorum; no unfortunate accident happened,
but joy and innocent festivity pervaded all ranks of people.
