Mr. Holt. Sir, New-York, 10th April, 1770. In your
journal, 1420 the public was acquainted that, Mr. M'Dougal
was visited by 45 virgins of this city, who sung the 2d part
of the 45 psalm after a slight alteration: I thought it was
true, for Mr. M'Dougal has been visited by men and women,
who call out 45, and go in that number, and they have been
asked the reason, why they adopted that number, to which
they can give no answer, but call, "we have a Wilks of our
own," this makes me think, they use the number 45, to make
his case similar to Alderman Wilkes's case; but there are
both men and woman in this city, that are led away with
enthusiastic notions, and this made me more ready to
believe, that they were enthusiastic enough to sing the 45
psalm; . . . [13 more lines] But may be they belong to ----
's pretended Dutch congregation, if this latter be true,
then I am ready to believe the other writer to be true,
because it is well known that they are enthusiastic enough
to sing the 45th psalm; . . . [4 more lines]
