Fort-George, New-York, March 24th, 1770. Last Sabbath being
the anniversary of the repeal of the detestable Stamp Act,
on Monday morning colours were displayed on Hamden-Hall and
the Liberty Pole opposite to it:--A company of about 300
gentlemen, freeholders and freemen of this city (real
friends to liberty) met at the former, in order to celebrate
that memorable deliverance from the chains which had been
forged for the Americans, by a designing and despotic
ministry.--A decent and plentiful entertainment was
provided. . . [57 lines about the dinner and toasts] The day
was celebrated with great joy and decency.-- A little before
sun-set, the company from Hampden-Hall, joined by a number
of people in the fields, went with music playing, and
colours flying, to the new-gaol, where they saluted Capt.
M'Dougall, with three cheers, which were answered in like
manner by the company within. . . [9 more lines]
