On Thursday morning last, we had the agreeable news of the
arrival of our governor, the Right Hon. John Earl of
Dunmore, at the Narrows, in his Majesty's ship the Tweed.
About three o'clock his Excellency came up in a barge, and
landed at the ferry stairs at White-Hall: On his landing,
the battery guns were fired, and all the shipping in the
harbour displayed their colours. . . [28 lines describing
events of following day] in the evening the gentlemen at
Hampden Hall, had a large bonfire erected in the Commons,
where was assembled the greatest number of people ever seen
on the like occasion. Most of the houses were handsomly
illuminated, and a genteel ball was given by the gentlemen
of the town and army, at Bolton's.
