Extract of a letter from Philadelphia. The Governor having
inform'd the the free holders of the city that he had
certain intelligence, of a large number of Paxton People's
coming to town, and for better regulation having papers
drawn up, for as many as would to sign, by way of
association, they were immediately sign'd by above 600
people. [12 more lines describing preparations for defense,
and as the Paxton people came close to the city:] The
Council were called, which sat till one, when a general
alarm was given, by firing one of the field pieces, ringing
all the bells, beating drum, crying Fire &c. which spread
general consternation [more, describing the threats and
finally the dispersion of the "rioters"].
