The rejoicings at Constantinople, on the birth of an heir to
the Ottoman throne, surpassed all description. There were
upwards of an hundred orchestras errected in different parts
of that capital, and furnished with all the ablest
musicians, who played without ceasing for seven days and
seven nights; during which there were the most superb
illuminations throughout the city and suburbs; and the fire
works were continued three successive nights on the canal
before the seraglio.
