London, September 1764. A correspondent signed Benedict,
complains of the wrong education generally given to girls;
instead of being instructed in marketing, and other
household affairs; he says, they are now taught to do
nothing but Dance, or what goes under the denomination of
genteel accomplishments, such as Fine-Work, &c. that they
are absolutely unable to make their own linen; or, in short,
to do any thing which is plain and useful. This, he justly
observes, is a wrong way of bringing up children, and
desires we would take some notice of it in our paper, that
his wife may see it, who, he tells us, is obstinately bent
on educating his only daughter in the foolish manner above
mentioned; especially when she knows his circumstances are
such, that he cannot afford to give her much fortune.
