Here I am,
Riding upon a black ram,
Like a whore as I am,
. . . [9 more lines; poem is inserted in a letter about
antiquity in manors of East and West Enborne. If a tenant
dies, the widow receives what the law calls a Free-Bench (or
the estate) while she lives single and chaste. But if she
commits incontinency, she loses the estate, unless she comes
into the court riding backward upon a black ram, with his
tail in her hand, and says the above verse.]
