London. . . Jan. 20. On Friday last a pretty singular
instance happened to a gentleman in Westminster, as he was
standing at the door of his own house; a person plainly
dress'd, with a box in his hand, came up to him, and told
him that he came from the city, and was desired to deliver
it to him. Upon which the gentleman answered, that he
supposed he was mistaken, for that he had no connection in
the city; but the person insisted upon leaving it, and
added, that he was sure he was not mistaken; he carried it
down into the kitchen, and took his leave. Upon opening the
box, there were found a letter, written in a great variety
of hands, to prevent a discovery, and two playhouse bills,
in which something seemed to be wrapp'd: on opening the
bundle, eight guineas were carefully concealed, and in the
letter was wrote, Sir, the inclosed is yours, honestly
yours, ask no questions, and you shall never know from whom
this comes.
