Extract of a letter from Amsterdam, April 7. . . We are told
that the affair of our Ambassador at Paris happened and
ended in the following manner; Mr. de Berckenrode going to
the play, prevailed upon the guard to let one of his
servants in livery remain with and attend him. This servant
being sent out upon some occasion by his master, when he
would have gone in again was stopped by the guard, livery
servants not being permitted to go into the play-house; upon
which he held up his cane at one of the under officers, and
for this he was arrested.
The Embassador then sent a note to the Lieutenant-General
de Police, to reclaim him; to which all the answer he
obtained was, that he must apply elsewhere. His excellency
thereupon wrote to M. Puysieux, expressing the good
qualities of his domestic, and demanding satisfaction. The
next day he received for answer, that though his servant
might be a perfect model of virtue, yet he was not
absolutely clear in the present case, which should be
immediately examined, and a report made to his Majesty.
This being accordingly done, the man was set at liberty. . .
