Extract of a letter from Gluckow in the Ukraine, bearing
date the 28th of June last.
The remarkable circumstances which have lately accompanied
the election of Count Cyrille Alexowitz Rasoumofsky, as
Attaman, or General of the Cossacks, belonging to the
Ukraine or Petty Russia, being very sufficient to give
foreigners an adequate, and distinct idea of the force or
power of that warlike nation, I imagine, the following
particulars will be thought no disagreeable amusement to an
European reader.
The Count de Henricroff, Major General, and Knight of the
order of St Alexander, who is constituted minister
plenipotentiary of the Empress of Russia, to aid and assist
in her name, and as her representative at the said election,
being actually gone from Petersbourg, accompanied by proper
commissaries for the due discharge of the trust reposed to
him, was received at his arrival on the frontiers of Petty
Russia, by a great number of the principal persons of that
country.
[1 column, Henricroff enters Ukraine, attends the
ceremony of installation in square of the grand market in
front of the church.] . . . the ensigns of honour belonging
to the grand General were carried with great solemnity, into
the church, and deposited on a large table that stood before
the altar.
There they remained 'till after Te Deum was sung,
accompanied with a great variety of instrumental musick; and
at the same time there was a general discharge of the
artillery and small arms. . .
