[In article: ON THE NATIVITY OF CHRIST]
There is a passage in the meditations of Sir Henry Wootton,
on the subject of this festival, which breathes such a true
spirit of devotion, as to render it deserving of our
attention on the present occasion. Sir Henry was ambassador
to the state of Venice about the year 1603. The passage is
as follows; . . . [13 lines]
"to solemnize the day of thy nativity; not with wanton
jolities, but with hymns of joy, and meditations of like
comfort."
