To the printers of the New-York Chronicle. GENTLEMEN,
On Tuesday evening last, was to have been presented, at the
house of J--n Balder D--h, by a number of young gentlemen
and ladies, --N.B. I say gentlemen, and ladies!--a tragedy
called the ORPHAN or UNHAPPY MARRIAGE; which, from the known
abilities of the tragedians, wou'd have been most tragically
tragidis'd: This excited the curiosity of a number of young
gentlemen, of this city, to draw up nigh the place of
execution: But our exhibitors, thought proper not to make
their appearance, either in proper person, or by their
attorneys, tho' often cited to appear. They remain'd there
a full hour, and peaceably withdrew; having had full amends
for their disappointment, by said Balder D--h's odd
grimaces, crook'd speeches, and uncommon gesticulations of
the body; and will do this justice to his merit, by
declaring no BUFFOON or MERRY ANDREW in their opinion, can
stand in competition with him! the gentlemen take this
opportunity, to return their thanks to the intended
performers, for their obliging disappointment: But should be
glad to wait of them, any evening they chuse to appoint, if
they will engage by their eloquence, to warm the
imagination, and move the passions to as great a degree, as
the antic tricks of our famous MERRY-ANDREW, rais'd their
laughter.
Done by order of a Num'rous Society, John Telltruth,
speaker.
