Boston, January 17. A person who lately ran away from New-
York, brings intelligence, that a splendid ball was given in
that city a few weeks since, by a number of British
officers. Sir Henry Clinton had for a partner the
celebrated Miss Franks, late of Philadelphia; as his
Excellency had to open the ball, in leading out his partner,
he desired the musician to play the old martial tune of -
Britons strike home! "Indeed, may it please your
Excellency, said the young lady; I think if he was to play
Britons go home! it would be much more pertinent and
suitable to the present time." Sir Henry was much
disconcerted, and could scarcely make a shift to get over
the severity of the repartee; however, the next morning he
complained to the lady's father of her rudeness to him.
"Indeed, Sir Henry, rejoined the old man, she is a saucy
girl, and if you will dance with her, you must e'en take up
with her jokes."
