By a letter of the 23d instant, from General Gates, to a
gentleman in this town, . . . "I do most heartily
congratulate you upon the success of our arms in South
Carolina, which I think finishes the British Empire in
America."
Immediately; upon this further confirmation of the
foregoing joyful intelligence, of our compleat victory over
the British Army, all the bells in town were set a ringing,
and continued, with short intermissions, the whole day, . .
