Cambridge, May 18. Extract of a letter from a gentleman in
New-London, to his friend in this palace, May 15.
I find, by letters from New-York, that there are several
cargoes of goods expected, which are sent out on purpose to
be disposed of for account of certain adventures in England,
who it seems have been induced to make the trial from
letters they have received from individuals in New-York,
which letters will soon be made publick; and for fear of
this, it's said several will be obliged to abscond. Two of
the council are already pushed off for London, and I think
the people in New-York are determined to assert their rights
with as much spirit as any of the colonies. I have here
included you Auchmuty's letter, which is a sample of what
those wretches are continually writing home to G. Britain;
and to the eternal disgrace of the present ministry, is what
they make up a judgment of the Americans from, and produce
as proofs that the opposition is only by a number of mad
people, who will disperse on the appearance of a red
coat:--But I hope this late dance of theirs will convince
them; if not, they must make another trial, and have (I
hope) to dance it over again.
