The Subscriber Respectfully informs the gentlemen and ladies
of this town, and the public in general, that he purposes to
teach MUSIC, Theorical, Rudimental and Practical.
The charms, beauties and advantages of music are so
universally known, that it is quite unnecessary to say any
thing for recommending it. But it is observ'd of this, (as
of other arts that nature has any share in) that it looses
most of it's beauties when not performed under the proper
restrictions of rule and judgment.--The study of music in
particular, is rendered much more engaging, and the practice
vastly more pleasing, when regulated by tune, time and
concord.
The publisher proposes to teach psalmody in it's various
branches, and has for authors Handel, Purcel, Green, Knap
and Williams, &c. from which he collects the best tunes,
hymns and anthems; he has likewise a choice collection of
canons, fuges, chorus's, an excellent oratorio set by the
celebrated Bull, an ode on friendship, and several
manuscript pieces by the famous Mr. Lyon.
He likewise advertizes the ladies and gentlemen that he
teaches all sorts of dramatic music, such as songs, airs,
solo's, duett's, dialogues, &c,--And expects from London by
the first opportunity, a choice collection of vocal music,
and set by the celebrated Arne, Boyce and Handel, consisting
of the newest and best songs, as they are now sung at the
Mary-Bone, Vaux-Hall and Covent-Gardens.
Those gentlemen and ladies who are inclined to gain a
knowledge in their entertaining, pleasing and noble art,
have now a chance of practising from the most easy rules and
approved masters.
For the convenience of the young gentlemen in town who are
disposed to club together in a singing society, and learn
psalmody, the publisher purposes to teach an hour and a half
in an evening till they lengthen.
The ladies and gentlemen who chuse to learn privately, and
by themselves, are inform'd the publisher will wait on them
at his or their own lodgings, as shall be most agreeable.
N.B. He sits for, and teaches the scale of the violin,
flute, harpsichord and organ.--The publisher and subscriber
may be spoke with by enquiring at Capt. Tilton's in
King-Street, Portsmouth.
[signed] William Crosby.
