Boston, July 18. Yesterday being the anniversary
commencement at Harvard College, in Cambridge, his
Excellency the Governor, his Honour the Lieutenant Governor,
a number of the honourable his Majesty's Council, together
with the Corporation, and the Governors of the College,
proceeded by the candidates for their first degrees in their
gowns, went in procession from the Hall to the
Meeting-House, where the exercises of the day were
introduced with a preparatory prayer by the Reverend
President, then followed a salutatory oration in Latian; to
this succeeded a dialogue in the Greek, and another in the
Samaritan language; after which the syllogistic
disputations; These being ended, the audience were
entertained with an elegant English Oration on the subjects
of science and liberty; and a humour sarcastical oration
closed the exercises of the morning; after which the
procession returned to the hall, where a genteel
entertainment was provided. Between four and five o'clock
P.M. the procession, preceeded by the candidates for their
second degree, returned from the hall to the meeting house,
when the Rev. President opened the afternoon services with a
Latin oratorio, after which the candidates for the Master's
degree held their usual syllogistic disputations in Latin,
which were succeeded by a fine English oration expressive of
the highest sentiments of gratitude to the benefactors of
the College. The several degrees were conferred in the
usual manner previous to the valedictory oration, a prayer
by the President, and an anthem performed by the
undergraduates closed the academical services of the day.
