London, May 15. In the characters which appeared on Monday
night at the Masquerade, a chimney-sweeper was exceedingly
humorous; one political stroke of his must not be forgotten;
he approached Mr. Wilkes with God bless your Honour, won't
you employ me, I sweep for soot, ho! and I signed the
remonstrance, your Honour?--A figure representing Alderman
Wilkes; a mask was observing to the philosopher the drollery
of their being in company both a real and imaginary Mr.
Wilkes; O Sir, returned the philosopher, the shadow will
naturally pursue the substance.--A figure of Razor; a ditto
of Quidnunc; both in the farce of the Upholsterer; One
circumstance of humour is worth relating here; Col. Lutteral
and Mr. Wilkes were both in dominos, and both unmasked; the
Colonel had been sitting some time on a sopha, and presently
after the Colonel had left it Mr. Wilkes by accident came
and sat down on the same sopha; quidnunc seeing this, ran in
great haste up to Razor and cried, Good news, brave news for
Old-England, Brother Razor, Mr. Wilkes has at last taken
Col. Lutterell's seat.--There characters of players,
sailors, friars, nuns, Quakers, shepherds, shepherdesses, a
beggar, and a St. Giles's bunter. An Old Maiden Prude was
continually crying out, that she should lose her reputation
in such company. Several of the nobility appeared in
dominos.
