Extract of a letter from Lisbon, July 30, 1762. . . And on
Thursday last, being the day appointed by his excellency the
governor for a public rejoicing on occasion of the reduction
of the Havannah: In the forenoon the Company of Cadets
commanded by Col. Jarvis, were mustered, and guarded his
Excellency the Governor, accompanied by the members of the
Honourable his Majesty's Council, and the House of
Representatives, from the Court House to the public lecture,
to express their gratitude to heav'n on this joyful
occasion, where a sermon, well adapted thereto was preach'd
by the Rev. Dr. Sewall, from 1 Chron. xxix. 11. At one
o'clock the bells of the town were rung, and continued
ringing the remainder of the day; the guns at Castle
William, the batteries in this town and Charlestown, as also
those on board the ships in the harbour were discharged: In
the afternoon his Excellency the Governor, with the whole
general court and a number civil and military officers of
the town, were escorted by the Company of Cadets to Concert
Hall, where his majesty's and other loyal healths were
drunk, and a concert of musick performed by the gentlemen
concerned in the management of it; in the evening there were
illuminations, bonfires, and a great variety of fireworks
played off at the public expence, in tokens of joy on this
glorious event.
