14 Nov 1738:12 (604)
New York, October, 30. This being the anniversary of his
Majesty's birth day, the same was observed here with the
usual solemnity: All the principal gentlemen of this city
waited on his Honour the Lieutenant Governour at the Council
Chamber in the Fort, to pay him the usual compliments of the
day, where the Royal and Provincial healths were drank,
under the discharge of the cannon from the Fort, (His
Majesty's regular troops having been the whole time under
arms.) The small pox beginning to spread in town, his
Honour (to prevent the spreading of it in the Fort) gave in
the evening, a magnificent ball at the house of Mr. Robert
Todd of this city, where there was the most numerous and gay
appearance of gentlemen & ladies, and the most splendid
entertainment that has been known here for many years. The
night concluded with illuminations, and all other publick
demonstrations of joy.
