Extract of a letter from St. Alban's, dated September 11.
Yesterday Nathanael Brassey, Esq; of Henni[n]sberry in
Hertfordshire, was met about four miles from this borough by
the freemen and inhabitants of the same, paying Scot and
Isot, to the number of two hundred persons on horseback,
eleven coaches, chariots, &c which were fill'd not only
within, but also crouded a top, before, and behind, and
there were at least one hundred legal voters on foot. Tho'
this was as large an appearance as has ever been seen of
legal voters, yet it would have been much larger had it not
been for a statue at Hemstead, about five miles off, which
prevented great numbers of people, who would have been
otherwise there: The train was preceded with French horns
and other musick; the way strew'd from Sandridge, by the
poorer sort of people, with sweet herbs and flowers; he was
welcom'd into town by the ringing of all the bells, and by a
loud acclamations of the people in general. It was very
observable, that during the procession through the town, and
while he stay'd there, there was no rudeness nor opposition,
as is usual at such times, but every body endeavour'd to
distinguish themselves as the first to express their
pleasure and satisfaction on the occasion; and there
appeared an universal agreement to fix upon this gentleman
to be one of the Representatives in the ensuing Parliament.
