From the South-Carolina Gazette, July 2, 1774. Mr. Timothy,
As the elder gentlemen of property in this colony have
already generously contributed to the relief of Boston, so a
number of younger gentlemen, also stedfast in the interest
of America, and willing, by any method in their power, to
contribute their mite towards alleviating the distresses of
their suffering country-men, propose to perform a play for
their benefit, provided they can be assured that the elder
and better-judging members of the community approve the
measure. They therefore beg the gentlemen to signify their
sentiments thro' you, and will proceed accordingly. If the
scheme should be executed, a sufficient number of tickets
will be printed and sold, and the money arising therefrom
deposited in the hands of the gentlemen who already take in
subscriptions. Even rice will be received, in lieu of
money, for tickets.
Theatrical entertainments are intended to instruct as well
as please; and as every possible method should be adopted to
establish the growing virtue of patriotism in the minds of
the zealous resolved Carolinians, so it is proposed, to act
Busiris, King of Egypt, written by the judicious Doct.
Young. The scene represents an injured gallant people
struggling against oppression, resigning their all to
fortune, and wading through a dangerous bloody field in
search of freedom. The characters are uniformly supported
throughout, the sentiments grand and striking, and clad in
an elegance of stile peculiar to the celebrated author. An
occasional prologue and epilogue will be attempted to please
an indulgent audience; and all possible dispatch will be
made by the gentlemen, who, conscious of their good
intention, at least hope an excuse of their proposal, and
wait to know the sentiments of a candid people. July 2,
1774. [signed] Ingenuus.
From the South-Carolina Gazette, July 4, 1774. Ingenuus,
&c. may rely upon the public approbation of their benevolent
design and proposal, and that it will meet with all
imaginable encouragement.
