How many useful mechanics are scattered over this wide
extended continent, who, a few years since, were measuring
their steps, to the sound of a fife and drum; but are now
eating the bread of industry, and living with their families
in peace and plenty? . . . [signed] An Old Man.  From my
hermitage near Falmouth, Casco-Bay, June, 1774.
