By a gentleman just arrived from Rome, we are informed that
the Pope, having the rights and interests of humanity much
at heart, was determined to put a stop to the further
qualifications of Italian singers (by castration) but that,
just as he was upon the eve of carrying the same into
execution, he received so many petitions from all orders of
people, "complaining of such an edict ruining the trade of
the country," that his holiness, through policy, was obliged
to desist from so laudable an undertaking.
