On the Nature and use of Criticism.
Criticism is the art of judging with propriety concerning
any object or combination of objects; but in a more limited
sense, the science of criticism is confined to the fine
arts: . . . [22 lines discussing the rational science of
criticism.] To the man who resigns himself entirely to
sentiment or feeling, without interposing any sort of
judgement, poetry, music, painting are mere pastimes. . .
