London. . . May 23. Mr. Wilkes was particular jocose and
gallant and stayed till late at the ball masque. He was
much tormented by a fat matron, meaning to be witty, on all
subjects, she chose politics, and boared the patriot a la
mort. To stop the mouth of this tiresome masque, he very
condescendingly kissed her. Those near him, who saw the
transaction, was surprised at his gallantry to this huge
motherly dame. He declared, in his comic way, to his
friend, upon his honour, that his only motive was to get
quit of the political, impertinent petticoat.
