London. . . Nov. 13 . . . Yesterday, as a lady at the Bank
was receiving her dividend, she laid a small cake down in a
paper upon the desk; while she signed her name, one of the
brokers immediately stole it, and placed a cinder in the
room; the lady took it up, and was greatly surprised at the
metamorphosis; but a gentleman telling her he imagined it
was done out of a joke, she wittily replied, "Then you must
allow, Sir, it was a black joke."
