To the Rev. Mr. Jonathan Boucher. . . [response in ongoing
controversy. In 2nd paragraph:] As to Aesop and Lethe, you
are mistaken at least as to my idea; I never imagined Lethe
any way at all belonged to Aesop, otherwise than in fiction.
The waters of forgetfulness, I thought, were created by
fancy; and I suppose Mr. Garrick, no more exceeded his
poetic authority in bestowing the distribution of them on
Aesop, than if his own fancy had originally created them.
