Upon the arrival of this great news [of reduction of
Montreal], the colours were hoisted, guns fired, &c. 
  And on Monday both houses of Assembly dined at the
Governor's, and in the evening his Excellency gave a ball in
the Council House, where there was a great number of
gentlemen, and a charming appearance of ladies; and the
whole city was beautifully illuminated.
