Location Philadelphia

15 Nov 1783:14, 21, 22 (107)
The following Memorial was presented on Monday last, to the
honorable the General Assembly of this state,
. . . [several columns relating to the prohibition of
presenting plays on the stage.] . . .
The Memorial of Dennis Ryan, in company very respectfully
sheweth,
That your Memorialists, at a great cost and expence, have
furnished themselves with every necessary and material for
managing and conducting theatrical performances and
exhibitions, and would willingly commence as soon as
circumstances will permit. But they find themselves
unfortunately embarrassed by an act of assembly, forbidding
such amusements under particular penalties and forfeitures.
. . . [Columns continue arguments supporting presentation of
plays and exhibitions, i.e. plays pay taxes, demonstrate
moral scenes, other states allow, &c.]
. . . [Arguments against plays made by B.]
. . . [A review committee is proposed to review each play
for appropriateness before presentation.]
. . . [No information is provided as to the outcome of the
request, but see advertisement following, on the Temple of
Apollo being presented.]
