Philadelphia, January 17. To the Printer. I have seen an
old comedy, in which is introduced a Mountebank, surrounded
with his phials, his cathartic powders, followed by
apothecaries holding syringes, and surgeons armed with
lancets and probes. "Come to me," calls out the Doctor,
addressing himself to the people, "come all to me, I give
health to those who have it not, and preserve it to those
that have: Take my bottles, buy my powders, I sell them for
a trifle, and you have it in your power, in an instant, to
get rid of all human infirmities; but if you hesitate to
purchase them, I will send you fevers, the gout, the stone,
my apothecaries and surgeons shall assist me, and will
destroy you all."

Sir Henry Clinton, has been justly copied after the
discourse of the Mountebank.
[1 1/2 columns: An apparent proclamation by Clinton, with
editorial/political comments interspersed. final comment:]
(We are very sorry that we cannot accept your invitation,
especially when we should have the happiness of so much good
company, as Lord Cornwallis, Chief Hangman of his Britannic
Majesty; James Robertson, Spy Commissioner; Joshua Martin,
Rebel Drummer; . . . [15 lines]
