Extract of a letter from Liverpool, to a gentleman at
Glasgow, dated Nov. 2. 
Our town is a scene of confusion and distress: All our hopes
of festivity in consequence of the wished-for arrival of our
West India ships, are changed to uproar, &c. for press
warrants came here yesterday from London. Our streets were
immediately infested with press gangs, who hauled on board
almost every creature they found in them. Our Theatre Royal
was going on with great prospect of success, as Mr. Digges,
the manager of the stage in Edinburgh, had agreed to play
four nights here in his return to Scotland; and further
advantages were likely to accrue by the coming of our
expected fleet. But these prospects were all blighted; the
sailors have left the city by shoals, and the gallery, which
forms the greater part of the audience in the Theatre, at
this time of the year, is deserted. The ships that arrive,
land their crews long before they come near the harbour, and
the poor tars are forced, after a long voyage, to fly from
their families into the country for protection . . . [6 more
