The following is taken from a manuscript account of the fire
that happened in Boston last Wednesday night. . . [14 lines
describing buildings burned]  Instead of ringing the bells
as usual, the soldiers beat to arms, by which the people
were in great confusion, not being used to such signals in
time of fire.
