A laugh is now circulating universally (a correspondent
informs us) in Dublin, at the expense of a nobleman not a
little remarkable for the delicacy of his disposition.
Stepping one day, about noon, to the lodgings of Miss C---y,
the young woman who sung last summer at M---c, and finding
the street door open, his Lordship walked up to the girl's
bedchamber, who had not yet arisen, and began to rally her
pretty smartly for lying so long in bed. Miss C---y took
all however in good part, and at last requested my Lord
would step down to her maid, and desire her to make all
possible expedition with a duck which was roasting for her
breakfast: . . . [he complies, maid asks him to turn spit
while she attends to mistress, maid alerts Lord's
acquaintances at nearby Coffee-House who come to find him so
occupied] like the unfortunate Dick Worthy, in Murphy's
farce of The Citizen. The affair being handed about, a
print was speedily published, representing the kitchen
scene, which has mortifyed the Right Honourable scullion so
much, that we hear that he retreated immediately from town,
to avoid the laugh and raillery of the publick.
