One of the correspondents of the Portsmouth Printer, in a
paragraph from thence, published 2 or 3 weeks ago, mentions
a custom, which he says prevails at Connecticut, of asking
strangers, who travel thro' that colony, many impertinent
questions;
. . . [21 lines describing an instance where a person was
questioned in a tavern 20 miles east of Hartford, and some
contraband articles were found.]
The court,. . . gave a further proof of the roughness of our
manner, and according to the usual method of proceeding in
such cases, ordered him to divert the spectators, by dancing
a few minutes under the stimulating and quickening
influences of the lash.
