A Modern Character. [Several paragraphs on the names
attributed to various types of people, such as an Ass, a
Hog, &c.]
An Old Cat is a romantick, talkative old maid, that has no
other amusement but scandal; that sits up late, and gets up
early, to collect all the lies of the place to retail them
round the town; . . .
Her most harmless moments are at Quadrille; where between
the deals, she can only deal round her arrows of detraction
to those who immediately present themselves to her view.
. . . She is the first to proclaim a death a burial, a
marriage, a courtship, or a christening; and two people of
the opposite sex, walking twice together in the streets, or
dancing twice together at the Assembly, is sufficient for
Bella to confirm it to be match or an intrigue.
