On Friday last M. Alderman Wilkes dined at the Magpye in
Chelsea, in consequence of an invitation from the
independent freeholders of Middlesex, in that place. As
soon as he alighted from his carriage, (about half past
three) he was saluted with eleven brass cannon, planted on
the bank of the river before the house for that purpose; and
the bells of the church were set a ringing. The meeting on
this occasion was very numerous.
. . . [22 lines follow on toasts drunk.]
Mr. Wilkes retired about eight o'clock, and was again
complimented with the cannon and bells. The evening was
concluded with great order and regularity.
