[Philadelphia] July 5. . . [28 lines] Yesterday being the
anniversary of American independence, it was celebrated here
by the ringing of bells, firing of cannon, &c. The usual
compliments and congratulations were paid to the president
and supreme executive council, on the auspicious occasion,
by all ranks of people.
An elegant entertainment was given by the president, at
which were present the honourable council, the field
officers of militia in the city and neighbourhood, and
several officers of the army. In the evening the public
were entertained with an exhibition, called a triumphal car,
prepared by Mr. Mason, attended with music, and a number of
little boys & girls dressed in white, carring torches.
