On Friday evening the important intelligence, brought by Mr.
Deane from France of that power's having acknowledged the
United States, free and independent, &c. came to town; and
on Saturday a number of respectable inhabitants dined at
Fairchild's.  The ringing of bells and firing of cannon
testified the joy of the people on the occasion. . . [20
