Wallingford, October 19, 1768. The Tuesday before last, a
number of young gentlemen, well skilled in musick (and who
for the purpose of perfecting in that noble and pleasing
science, especially to promote psalmody) met in this town,
and about two o'clock, P.M. went into the new-meeting-house,
where previous notice had been given the sabbath before.
The public exercises were begun with an anthem; then after
prayer, and singing a psalm, a sermon suited to the occasion
was preached from Psal. 47. ver. 7. After which a number of
anthems were sung in four parts; which was succeeded by a
very ingenious and spirited English oration, in praise of
music, pronounced by one of the musicians, of a liberal
education. The whole was concluded with prayer; and the
congregation, which was considerable numerous, being blessed
in the name of the Lord, dispersed, testifying by their
countenances, they were highly satisfied and pleased with
what they had seen and heard.
