The following advertisement is taken from a Charlestown
paper of July 31, called "The Royal South Carolina Gazette,"
printed by Robinson, Macdonald and Cameron.
"Subscriptions are open at . . . [5 lines, listing
merchants] where it is hoped the inhabitants of this place
will generously contribute towards the redemption of the
bells, by the custom of war become the property of the
commanding officer of artillery."
We shall make not other remark on the above advertisement
than to mention, that it is not sects of religion, nor
party-names, which have any effect on the enemy; Church or
meeting, Whig or Torey, are to them alike. Their object is
property and plunder wherever they can find it, of from
whoever they can take it; and if they would not spare the
Bells of the Church, of which they stile themselves
defenders, what is there they will not confiscate, could
they have it in their power?
