Extract of a letter from an officer of distinction in the
American army, dated Camp, Middle-brook, June 28, 1777.
Since I wrote you last, the enemy have made a precipitate
retreat. . . [24 lines describing brutality of British
troops.]
   This afternoon, by their motions, they are again retiring
to Amboy; a great number of houses are now on fire; wherever
they go bloodshed and desolation mark their footsteps. We
have all the reason in the world to imagine they are going
to New-England.  We all know what we have to depend upon;
therefore sound the trumpet, and let the alarm go forth.
You are fore-warned; if you are not fore-armed, you will
have nobody to blame but yourselves. . . [3 lines]
