Extract of a letter from New Windsor, dated Aug. 5.
Thursday se'nnight arrived here three companies of rifle
men, under the command of Messrs. Smith, Loudon, and Nogle,
consisting of 330 men, they rested here till Friday
afternoon, and some staid till Saturday morning, when they
went off in high spirits; the same afternoon a company of
Virginians 100 in number, commanded by Capt. Morgan, got
here; on Sunday morning at two o'clock they beat the drum
to gather their men together, to cross the river; they
embarked about eight o'clock and before nine, 300 more came
from Pennsylvania under the command of Messrs. Chambers,
Miller & Hendricks, the drums were beating, the fifes
playing the whole Sabbath, and the Indian war hoop passing
from one to the other. . . There has passed by this place
within this ten days, five sloops of Provincial soldiers
bound to Albany; one went past when the first 300 rifle men
were here, they beat the drum, (as I fancy they saw our
liberty colours hoisted, and thought there was something to
do here) and then gave three cheers, our people then got on
the hill behind our house, and with drums beating, and fifes
playing, returned them three cheers, which was again
returned by the sloop's company. . .
