Williamsburgh, (in Virginia) July 2. The Governor has
issued his proclamation, and offered a reward of Fifty
Pounds, for apprehending one Nicholas Curlett, lately a
tavernkeeper in Winchester, who on the 27th of May
barbarously murdered Mr Jeremiah Beall, a merchant of that
place by firing through his door at him with a rifle. It
seems Mr. Beall, and some others, had been merry-making that
day, and in the evening, hearing a fiddle at Curlett's
Tavern, they proposed joining the company there, but were
refused admittance by Curlett, who shut the door upon them.
They persisted in their resolution to enter the house.
Curlett went through his back door to a neighbour's for
powder and ball, and upon return, finding them still at the
door, instantly fired. The ball entered on one side of the
forehead of a young man, Mr. Beall's storekeeper, which has
since been extracted, and it is thought he will recover. Mr
Beall received his mortal wound by a splinter from the door.
